Vogue: Was there a specific point during the pandemic when you started working on the record, or did it come about organically? Karen Elson: After touring my second record, I really went all out. It was an incredible experience, but also exhausting. And somewhere along the way, there were a few encounters and experiences that didn’t necessarily feel so good. When I came out of that, for the first time in my life, I kind of fell out of love with making music. I had this terrible crisis, in a way, and had to ask myself: Can I do this? Can I put myself in this position? Then, during the pandemic, a very interesting sea change happened. First of all, it was the first time since I was 16 that I stayed in one place longer than two months, but I also fell in love with being a music fan again. The things I would do to keep myself sane in between homeschooling kids, and just looking at the news and going, “Oh god, the world’s falling apart,” was to sit in my back garden and look at the sky with my headphones on and listen to music. I became that teenage girl again, and music spoke to me in a way that I had almost forgotten. I started this series on Instagram called Radio Redhead, where I’d sit in my home office, learn how to play a song, plug in my guitar and a mic, and just do a video of the song, and it kind of took off! [Laughs.] I think [it was] because it was so genuine, and it was just me being the music lover that I am. So then I recorded a little EP during the pandemic of my favorite covers I was doing, and that gave me the confidence to make another album.

Nashville is so different from other cities, and the creative community here is so close. Everyone’s not staying in the studio until four o’clock in the morning—you’re going home to tuck your kids in bed. And again, I needed that during the pandemic. So many things came to the surface for me, just in terms of how I live my life and the direction I wanted to go in. I had these epiphanies, especially when I saw people I loved getting really sick or passing away from COVID. There’s nothing like that, really, to put you in the frame of mind where you’re asking: Why am I here? What am I doing? What’s my contribution? Do I want to be stressed out all the time and constantly feel overwhelmed or insignificant across the various businesses that I’m in? Or do I just want to do what my heart is calling me to do? I know it’s a privilege to have the ability to do that, so I just thought, I’m going to do that.
